Canyon Creek PTA 2019 STEM Fair

Canyon Creek PTA is hosting a STEM Fair on Tuesday, April 23rd, 6-7:30 PM in the Canyon Creek Gym.

All Canyon Creek Families Invited!

This event is open to ALL families to attend, even if they do not present anything at the fair. Come explore, see what friends have put together, learn, and most importantly-- have fun!!

Present at the Fair

Registration deadline has passed (April 16th).

This is an opportunity for ANY Canyon Creek student to complete a STEM-related project, display it and discuss their findings with their peers, parents and teachers. Let’s get our kids engaged in science, technology, engineering and math! Add an art component to make it a STEAM-related project!

Rules:

Any Canyon Creek student can participate (grades K-5). Students can work in a group, if desired.
Upon registration, a poster display board, information packet/resource list will be provided.
Projects can encompass any topic relating to science, technology, engineering, math and/or art. Ideas include creating a diorama, demonstrating a principle, presenting a collection, engineering a new design, conducting and reporting an experiment, coding a program, displaying an apparatus, etc.
Students should do their own work with minimal supervision/assistance from parents.
By registering, students are committing to participating and parents are committing to getting their child(ren)/projects to STEM night.
Projects must be delivered to the gym on Tuesday, April 23rd between 4:30 - 5:45 pm. There will be tables setup by grade, for students to display their projects! If you needed electricity, please talk to a volunteer to find out where you should be.

Volunteer Opportunities

This is a pretty low key event, with the students as the primary focus during the event. We would appreciate help for

Setup of the space, table setup, signage, etc. (3:45-4:45pm)
Helping students get setup, find the grade level table, etc. (4:45-6pm)
Cleanup after event, taking tables down, etc. (7:30pm until finished)

Resources

To help your child explore ideas, we have partnered with the Canyon Creek Library. The librarians will be setting up a section of books dedicated for the STEM fair. Please have your child talk to the librarian if interested in checking out these books.

Timetable

Below is a 5-week sample timetable that may help students plan and prepare their projects. This timetable is provided only for guidance and is up to the discretion of the student to follow or not. Not all items will apply to all projects.

Week 1: March 18th – March 24th

Choose a topic or problem to investigate
Check resources in school or community library
Gather all the written material you can find on the topic

Week 2: March 25th – March 31st

Begin putting your project notebook together
Start collections or experiment
Begin designing display unit

Week 3: April 1st – April 7th

Begin building display unit
Design all visual aids, take photographs you need
Complete your research
Write first draft of report
Continue your experiments or collecting items for your display

Week 4: April 8th – April 14th

Set up your apparatus and test it
Construct background for display
Design and assemble graphs or charts
Double check your written data

Week 5: April 15th – April 22nd

Complete experiment and record data
Write and type final report
Setup display unit at home and test

STEM Fair – April 23rd

Setup your presentation: 4:30-5:45pm
Present your project: 6-7:30pm
