Talking to Kids - Resources for Parents & Guardians

Do you know what it means to be inclusive in our school and local community?
You may ask w
hat is inclusion? Simply put, inclusion is the act of being included.
We all know what it feels like to be excluded- and it does not feel good.
Let’s do better for ourselves and our students!

About the Presentation

Folk wisdom tells us that young children don't notice differences or have any biases, yet research is telling us otherwise. What are age appropriate ways to develop intentionally inclusive and identity conscious children?

This session will give parents of children from elementary to middle school, a developmental timeline for when kids notice difference, absorb biases, and believe stereotypes (much earlier than most adults think).

Parents will learn age appropriate conversational tools and advice for:

  • modeling behaviors for kids
  • coaching them for reacting to difference
  • choosing/using media mindfully
  • exploring identity and cultural competency
