Canyon Creek PTA STEM Fair

Canyon Creek Coyotes LOVE Science! 

We are excited to announce and support our students in their science discovery with the Canyon Creek PTA STEM Fair.

Being remote is sure different for an event like this, but our hope is that students will work independently on this with minimal parent support and they will have a fun time exploring some experiments.

Here's How It Will Work

• April 4th - April 18th: Conduct Science Experiment OR Research Project
• Students choose a science experiment to conduct or research. We have included suggestions below for each grade level. Students can also choose their own.
• Students perform experiment and record results OR complete research.
• April 18th - April 23rd: Compile and Submit the Results and/or Presentation

• We would LOVE to support all Canyon Creek students in their science exploration. If a student would like to showcase their work on a trifold board, we will provide one. Please email STEMFair@canyoncreekpta.org to arrange for pickup. Since we are virtual, we will NOT BE collecting the trifold boards.

• Families can submit this google form and share the "presentation" in the form of:

• Pictures of the trifold board, presentation posters, etc (3 max)
• Google Docs
• Google Sheets
• Powerpoint
• Short video (2 minutes max)
• We will then showcase all the student’s projects via our website.

Suggested Science Experiments (by grade level)

Kindergarten:

• How Do Plants Absorb Water? - Cut the stems of white flowers and place in different colors of water
• Dishing Out the Colors - Drip food coloring in milk and watch the colors spread after dropping in dish soap 
• Eureka! Volume and the Displacement of Water - Measure how many of an object it takes to overflow a cup of water

1st Grade:

• Salt Water Density - See how the amount of salt in water determines how well objects float
• Building a Simulated Volcano - See how different amounts of ingredients change the eruption of a volcano
• Taste Perception - Try to guess what food you're tasting with your eyes closed, nose plugged, or both

2nd Grade:

• Crystal Wonderland - Grow crystals in different shapes and compare the results with other shapes and salt amounts
• Erosion Experiment - See how a fan and water affect dirt and sand structures
• Science Behind Keeping Flowers Fresh - See how the solution you put flowers in changes their lifespan

3rd Grade:

• Bleeding Paper - Use acids and bases to write on goldenrod paper
• Rough Riders - See how different textures affect a soda can rolling down a ramp
• Paper Airplanes - Compare how far different airplane styles fly

4th Grade:

• One-Man Drinking Glass Band - Fill cups with different amounts of water to see how it changes the sound when you hit them
• Make Your Own Fizzy Lemonade - Use different amounts of ingredients to make lemonade fizzy
• Music and Plants - See how the type of music you put on around a plant affects its growth 

5th Grade:

• Layered Liquids (A Study in Density) - Pour different liquids into a column and see how they position themselves relative to the other liquids
• How to Make a Rubber Band Car - Experiment with amounts of rubber bands to see how fast and far your car rolls
• The Ghost in the Tube - Combine different amounts and temperatures of hot and cold water to create steam, or a "ghost"
